John R. Smith, 64, of Springfield, formerly of Petersburg, passed away Friday, September 30, 2011, at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born October 7, 1946, the son of John W. and Dorothy L. Smith, in Ripley, IL. He married Debra L. Currie in Springfield on May 27, 1972.
John graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in Accounting. He was a CPA and partner at Meyer and Van Meter, which later merged with Sikich Gardner & Co., and then he became a sole practitioner. He enjoyed golfing, tailgating, and spending time with friends and family. He attended First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Debra of Springfield; son, Adam Smith of Springfield; daughter, Lyndsey (husband Barry) Houmes, and grandson, Nathaniel Houmes of Rochester; one sister, Delores Burke of KS; uncle, Harold (wife Norma) Smith of Rushville; uncle, Paul Eve of IN; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Petersburg. Pastor John Vidakovich will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the ALS Association, Clinton Masonic Lodge No. 19 Petersburg, or donor’s choice.
