William A. Schmidt

1922 - 2010

William A. Schmidt, 87, of Havana, passed away at Mason District Hospital in Havana at 4:05 p.m. on Friday, July 9, 2010. He was born August 21, 1922 in Havana to Alfred and Bessie (Lawrence) Schmidt. He married Doris Scarcliff in Tennessee on April 25, 1943 and she survives.

Mr. Schmidt is survived by his wife, Doris, of Havana, one son, John Schmidt, of Havana and three nieces, Jo Woodard, Lynn Hall, and Brenda Garlisch. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Ellen Woodard.

Mr. Schmidt was a member of the Havana 1st United Methodist Church, VFW Post #6408 and American Legion Post #138. He had served in the US Coast Guard from 1944-1945 during WWII in the Pacific Theatre. He worked for Miles Laboratory and later owned and operated Schmidt Clothing in Havana for several years. He was an active community member, serving on the Havana City Council, State Bank of Havana Board of Directors and the United Federal Bank Board of Directors in Peoria.

Funeral services will be held at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 12, 2010 with visitation one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow the service at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana.
