Havana, IL - Emelia D. "Mele" Oswalt, 87, of 424 E. Main St., Havana, IL died at 11:15 pm Fri. Dec. 30, 2005 at OSF St. Francis, Peoria, IL. She was born June 4, 1918 in Fredericktown, MO the daughter of R. C. And Clara Dickson Mayo. She married Lester A. "Red" Oswalt Oct. 24, 1937 at West Point, MS and he died Sept. 10, 1996.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Patsy A. (Husband: Ed) Reilly of Auburndale, FL and Betty (husband: Bob) Kessler of Lewistown, IL; one daughter-in-law, Sally Oswalt, 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. She is also survived by 2 brothers, Rev. Dr. C. Douglas Mayo of Greenville, Tennessee and M. Linn (wife: Dean) Mayo of Texarkana, TX. Her parents and one son, Robert Preceded her in death.

Mele was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Havana, Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Havana Woman’s Club, the Mason District Hospital Auxiliary, VFW Post #6408 Auxiliary, the board of the Peoria Journal Star, and a former feature editor of the Mason County Democrat where for the past 20 years she compiled the "Old Times Column." She loved to travel and do photography as well as being an avid artist. She attended Grenada Girls College in Grenada, MS.

Services will be held at 11:00 am Wed, Jan. 4, 2005 at the Hurley Funeral Home in Havana, conducted by Rev. Robert Smith. Burial will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial Contributions may be may to the First United Methodist Church in Havana.
