Gail J. H. Thies

(1916-2005)

Gail J. H. Thies, 88, of Mason City died at 10:20 a.m. Sunday, September 25, 2005 at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

He was born December 5, 1916 in Havana, Illinois to George H. and Edith Thies.  He married Iola Squire in 1937.  She died in 1958.  He married Genevieve Hoffert in 1960. 

Survivors include his wife; three daughters: Jeanie Taylor of Bonita Springs, FL, Janet (Bob) Werner of New Holland, IL, and Beth (Mike) Krause of Manito, IL: one-step daughter, Rhonda (John) Knoles of Mason City, IL: one-step son, Jim (Debbie) Hoffert of Decatur, IL: thirteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren: one brother, Allen Blessman of Mason City, IL: and one step-sister, Janet (Gorden) Meyer of Mason City, IL.

He was preceded in death by his father, his mother and step-father, Arthur Blessman, who raised him, one daughter, Diana G. Behrends, and two brothers, Edward Blessman and Earl Thies.

Mr. Thies graduated from San Jose High School in 1935.  He was a farmer and a well-known breeder of purebred Hampshire hogs.  He was a director of the National Hampshire Board, an assistant swine superintendent at the Illinois State fair, and was inducted into the Illinois Purebred Swine Council Hall of Fame in 1997.  He was a 4-H leader, a member of the Illinois Farm Bureau, a Mason for 52 years and a 50 year member of the Greenview Lodge No. 653, an Ansar Shrine member of the New Salem Shrine Club, a Mason City Township Trustee, and a volunteer bull-shooter at the Mason City Area Nursing Home.  After retiring from the farm, he became an accomplished woodworker. He was also a member of the Mason City United Methodist Church.

Services for Mr. Thies will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at the Mason City United Methodist Church.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services.  The Rev. Stephen King will officiate with burial in Mason City Cemetery. 

Memorial Contributions may be made to Mason City United Methodist Church or Mason City Area Nursing Home.
