W. Eugene Oney

1936 - 2009

W. Eugene Oney, 73, of Havana, passed away at 11:27 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, 2009 at Mason District Hospital in Havana. He was born August 30, 1936 in Caloway County, Missouri to Wallace and Esther (Counts) Oney. He married Sherry Rapp in Morton on January 15, 1956.

Mr. Oney is survived by his wife, Sherry, of Havana, five sons, Chris Oney of Havana, Ted (Lynn) Oney of Tampa, FL, Scott (June) Oney of Granite City, IL, Jeffrey (Diane) Oney of Mason City, Victor (Christina) Oney of Havana, daughter, Sheryl (David) Roos of Havana, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Norman (Ethel) Oney of Groveland and four sisters, Francis (Jim) Johnson of Smithville, MO, Mary (Ronnie) Stolba of East Peoria, Kathy (Milton) Smith of Princeville and Donna (Wayne) Troutman of Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, one niece and one sister.

Mr. Oney was a member of the Havana 1^st United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Havana Optimist Club, a former member of the Havana Jaycees, a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge,  member and past president of the Illinois Food Retailers Association, and had served for many years on the Mason District Hospital Board and Mason District Hospital Foundation.  He had owned and operated Oney’s Food Stores in Havana, Mason City and Manito for several years.

Funeral services will be held at the 1^st United Methodist Church on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana.  Burial will follow the services at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana. Rev. Sidney Davis will officiate.
