Helen Marie Mitchell
(1909 - 2008)
Helen Marie Mitchell, 99, a resident of Wesley Village
in Macomb, passed away at 4:30 pm, Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at the Wesley
Village Health Care Center.
She was born in Hurley, Wisconsin to Byron Eli and Ida
Schmolenski Booth on July 10, 1909. In July of 1914 she and her sister were
adopted by Oscar Baker and Marie Malotta Harrauff in Princeton, IL. She married
Howard Mitchell in Petersburg, IL in 1931. He preceded her in death in 1982.
She is also preceded in death by her parents; her sister
and brother-in-law, Mel Vera Rea and James Rea; and two sons-in-law, John
Shoemaker and Russell Neilson.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan Shoemaker of Macomb and Nancy
Neilson of Duluth, Minnesota; three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
She attended the school in Princeton and then Knox College in Galesburg.
Following her years at Knox, she went to Petersburg to teach music in the school
system, married her husband, and was active in the music life of the community
and Central Presbyterian Church, as well as activities of the community for
fifty years, being involved in the Women’s Club, on the original Board of
Directors for the Shambolee Golf Club, director of the church choir and several
singing groups. She sang for many organizations throughout the area during those
years as a soloist and then with her daughters. She and her husband retired to
Diamond Head, Mississippi in 1978 where she remained until moving to Macomb in
1986.
Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Macomb where a
memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm Friday, November 7, 2008 with Reverend
Amy Loving officiating. Additional visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 pm
Saturday, November 8, 2008 at the Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg with burial
to immediately follow at the Oakland Cemetery in Petersburg.
Memorials may be made to either Wesley Village or the McDonough Choral
Society.
Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb and Hurley Funeral Home in
Petersburg are in charge of arrangements.
