James O. Bergman
(1932-2007)
James O. Bergman of Mason City died on October 16, 2007 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield after a ten-month battle with lung cancer. He was born to Fannie (Conklen) and Offie Bergman on June 26, 1932 on a farm in Mason City , IL . Jim graduated from Mason City High School in 1949, then served in the United States Army for two years. He was married on February 17, 1957 to Roberta Anne Ellmore, who preceded him in death in 2005 after 48 years of marriage.
Jim farmed for several years in Mason City before graduating from the Illinois State Police Academy in 1966. He retired in 1991 following a 25-year career on the police force. After retirement Jim served thirteen years as alderman for the city of Mason City , worked at the Mason County courthouse, and volunteered as Honor Guard for the American Legion.
Jim has been a life-long and active member of the Mason City United Methodist Church and he will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Jim is survived by his three sons, Greg (wife Susan) of Chester , NJ ; Gary (wife Deborah) of Charlotte , NC ; and, Todd (wife Theresa) of St. Louis, MO; six grandchildren, Hillary, Matthew, Alexander, Ryan, Abigail and William; brother Robert Bergman of Mason City, IL and sister Mary K. Young of Lincoln, IL -- all of whom he loved deeply.
Visitation will be held from 5 - 7pm on Friday, October 19 at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City . Funeral services will be held at Mason City United Methodist Church at 11am on Saturday, October 20 with burial to follow at the Mason City cemetery. Lunch will be served for friends and family at the church at approximately 12:30 p.m.
