James C. Combs

1926 - 2008

James C. Combs, 82, of Petersburg, died on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at 6:38 pm at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born on April 25, 1926 in rural Mason County to Virgil and Bernice Smith Combs. He married Yuvonne E. Dew on June 12, 1948 in Springfield. She preceded him in death.

He is survived by and sadly missed by his two daughters, Vicki (Milo) Vogt and Debbie (Rick) Woods, all of Petersburg; four grandchildren, Lindsay (Shawn) Wilken, Brian Vogt, Eric (Kristen) Woods, and Emily Woods; four great grandchildren, Ally, Chelsea, Keegan, and Ella; a brother, Hobart Combs of Havana; and several nieces and nephews.  "Popeye" loved and cherished his family.

His parents, wife, one sister, and one brother preceded him in death.  

Mr. Combs had been the Menard County Clerk, retiring in July 1989 after 22 1/2 years. He then worked part-time for Heubner Tire and he and his wife were hosts at New Salem Camp Grounds.  He liked meeting and greeting the campers and was a die-hard Cubs fan.

He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Free Church in Petersburg, ANSAR Shrine, and Petersburg Rotary Club, having received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award..

Funeral services will be held Friday May 2, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Evangelical Free Church.  Visitation will be held Thursday May 1, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg.

Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Petersburg.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Children's Hospital, St. Paul's Evangelical Free Church, or to the organization of the donor's choice.
