John Durbin Matthews

1919 - 2010

John Durbin Matthews, 91, of Macomb, formerly of Kilbourne and Bushnell, passed away at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2010. He was born January 7, 1919 in Midland, IL to Ira Lyman and Lillie (Carmichael) Matthews. He married Virginia Rogers in Missouri on May 8, 1943. She survives.

Mr. Matthews is survived by his wife Virginia, of Macomb, two daughters, Mary Marr of Chandlerville, Kathleen (Jerry) McCormick, of Burlington, IA, 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and one sister, Twila Cullor of Mason City. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 4 sisters, and two daughters, Jean See and Connie Boggs.

Mr. Matthews farmed in Kilbourne and later in Bushnell for many years. He also raised cattle, which he enjoyed very much. He retired in 1983 and moved to Macomb in 2007. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a great husband and father. He enjoyed family gatherings and will be missed by all.

Funeral services will be held at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 20, 2010. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 19, 2010 also at the funeral home. Burial will follow the services at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana. Pastor Dave Byrd will officiate.
