Leonard H. Jones

1923 - 2011

Leonard H. Jones, 87, of Peoria, formerly of Havana, passed away at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2011. He was born November 11, 1923 in Havana to Harrison and Myrtle (Greenwood) Jones. He married Vera Osing at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Bath, IL on February 4, 1945.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Vera, of Peoria, four daughters, Nancy (Dale) Atkinson, of Pekin, Cassandra (Garry) Wagener of Waconia, MN, Sue (Bob) Sidell of Peoria and Julie (Stephen) Steinborn of Watertown, MN. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Jan and Shelly Atkinson, Gretchen (Bret) Burau, Matt Wagener, Jamie (Kevin) Witte, Sarah Steinborn, two great-grandchildren, Jack and Annie Witte as well as one sister, Lu (Lloyd) Clark of Havana. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.

Mr. Jones was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Peoria. He had served on the original planning committee for Concordia Lutheran School and later served on its Board of Directors. He retired from Illinois Central Gulf Railroad after 43 years. He was a volunteer at Forest Park Nature Center and the Lutheran Home in Peoria.

Graveside services will be held at St. John’s Cemetery at Bath on Monday, March 7, 2011 at 11:00 with Rev. Brian Lesemann officiating. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Peoria with Rev. Joe Meyer officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church or Concordia Lutheran School.
