Virginia Louise Boring Wood

1912 - 2009

Virginia Louise Boring Wood, born November 10, 1912, of Havana, Illinois, passed away peacefully in her home early Monday, November 9, 2009, after a long and bountiful life. She was 96 years old, but always young at heart. She will be remembered for her lively wit, positive attitude, generosity, love of family & friends, and artwork. Throughout her life, "Louise" loved to dance, paint, read, refinish furniture, redecorate homes, reminisce, eat chocolate, and wear interesting hats (not necessarily in that order!).

She is survived by her son, Joseph Carl Wood (Kim Lenox Wood); daughter Sarah Louise Wood; granddaughters Jennifer and Jacqueline; and grandsons Robert and Stephen. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Dr. Oliver Marshall Wood. "Doc" and Louise were long time residents of Ipava, Illinois.

Her ardent support of and belief in education began with her time at Illinois College where she proudly served as their first homecoming queen in 1933. After graduating in 1934, Louise taught school for several years and later in life held adult art classes at VIT and Ipava. In 1982, Illinois College presented Louise with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in recognition of her service to the college. In addition to her educational interests, Louise belonged to the Vermont, IL Chapter of PEO (a philanthropic organization) where she was active for many years.

Louise established a student scholarship fund at Spoon River College (SRC) and the family has asked that any memorials be directed to Spoon River College, 45 East Side Square, Suite 302, Canton IL, 61520 in care of the "Louise Wood Scholarship Fund."

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Louise’s loyal home health care givers, the hospice organization, and her doctors.

There will be a private family funeral service and a public memorial service at Sheridan Lane (formerly The Lakewood), in Havana IL Saturday, November 14th from 12-3 p.m. A light luncheon will be served. Anyone wishing to share memories and a little chocolate is invited to attend. For more information visit www.hurleyfh.com.
