Michael Gene Dempsey

1952 - 2008

Michael Gene Dempsey, 55, of Peoria, formerly of Quincy and Havana passed away at 5:20 am Sat., April 12, 2008 at OSF St. Frances in Peoria. He was born July 30, 1952 in Quincy, IL the son of Edward J. and Alice R. Winking Dempsey. He married Jacquelyn S. McCormick March 16, 1974 in Macomb, IL.

Mike earned his Bachelor and Master Degrees from Western Illinois University and taught agriculture at Unity Mendon and Palmyra, MO, then he served as principal at St. Mary's Grade School in Quincy, IL and Havana's grade school.  Following this he was principal at Versailles, IL and St. David, IL during which time he interned and earned his Specialist Degree in Education Administration from Western Illinois University. He then became Superintendent at Bradford, IL and later at Pleasant Hill, Illinois where he eventually retired due to ill health. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Peoria and the Illinois Association of School Administrators.

He is survived by his wife, Jackie, one son, Brent Alan Dempsey of Peoria, his parents of Quincy; two sisters, Joan (Craig) Kroeter of Quincy, IL and Sharon (Al) Mast of Springfield, IL and one brother Mark (Milicent) Dempsey of Fowler, IL.   Included in his family are 16 nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Winking and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dempsey. Services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Havana conducted by Father Bruce Lopez. Burial will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 8:00 pm Tuesday at the Hurley Funeral Home in Havana. The family requests no flowers and asks that memorial contributions be made in Mike's name to OSF St. Francis Oncology (1700) floor or the Illinois Cancer Center.
