Robert L. Beard 1924 - 2010
Robert L. Beard, 86, of Havana, died Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born January 5, 1924 in Mason City, the son of Marguerite Douglas Beard and Max Beard. He married Dorothy Lee, August 10, 1946. Mr. Beard was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Jim Beard and Donald "Red" Beard and a sister, Betty Sue Max Driscoll. He served in the Navy during WWII on the USS Sumpter. Mr. Beard's time of service included the invasions of the islands of Saipan and Tinian where he volunteered to be part of the invading Marine forces. His naval career ended in 1948. Mr. Beard was a 50 year member of American Legion Post #138 in Havana. For 18 years, Mr. Beard owned and operated the Lawford Barber Shop in Havana, along with Jim "Fred" Bohm. After leaving the barbering business, he became a Prudential Insurance Agent from which he retired after 15 years. He coached Little League baseball and umpired for a number of years. Mr. Beard was a familiar and friendly presence to many friends and citizens of his hometown, Havana, easily acknowledged and known with "Hi, Bob!" Mr. Beard is survived by his wife, Dorothy, sons Marc Beard of Bloomington, Rex (Gail) Beard of White Hall, daughter, Chris Powell of Carlinville, grandchildren, Bond (Andrew) Wyman, Ryan (Michelle) Beard, Brooke (Kyle) Wright and a great-grandson, Xander Robert Wyman as well as several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Hurley Funeral Home in Havana. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 27, at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow the services at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana. Memorial contributions may be made to Havana Park District Little League or to Havana Health Care Resident Activity Fund. Online memorial messages may be left for the family at www.hurleyfh.com.
