Marion Russell (Russ) Petty

 

1922 - 2011

 

Marion Russell (Russ) Petty, 88, of Forest City, IL passed away on Sunday April l0, 2011 at St. John's Hospice in Springfield, IL.

He was born May 15, 1922 in Canton, IL the son of Charles and Clara Vance Petty. He married Lois Marie Engelke on June 23, 1945 at Havana, IL and she passed away in 2002.

 

Russ formerly owned and operated M.R. Petty Trucking, served as Road Commissioner for Forest City Township for many years and retired from Mason County Highway Department. He was active with the Manito-Forest City Optimist Club until it closed, having served as President, served on the Forest City Village Board, and had been a member of the Forest City Volunteer Fire Department, having served as Chief. He served in the U.S. Marines in the Pacific during WWII. He was a Life member of the 2nd Marine Division Association, served as Commander of the Forest City American Legion Post 1190, currently a member of the Manito American Legion Post 0561 in Manito and a member of the VFW Post 6408 in Havana.

 

He is survived by his son Terry L. (wife Susan) Petty of Springfield, IL, grandson Russell W. Petty of Springfield, IL. Three sisters; Eva Flaharty of Havana, Beulah Haage of Tucson, AZ, Marilyn (husband Wayne) Shafer of Pekin, IL, four brothers, Lyle Petty of Havana , IL, Charles (wife Martha) Petty of Overland Park, KS, James Petty of Forest City, IL and Dean (wife Carol) Petty of Havana, IL. He was preceded by his parents, wife Lois, two sisters Lillian Bassett and Clarabelle Hall.

 

Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday April 13, 2011 at the Hurley Funeral Home in Havana, IL. Service will be held on Thursday April 14, 2011 at Hurley Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Earl Kinnee officiating. Burial will be in Meadowlawn Cemetery in Manito, IL. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Forman Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Department.
