Sheryl Jean Layton 1948 - 2008
Sheryl Jean Layton, 59, of Havana, passed away at her home at 10:22 p.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2008. She was born November 27, 1948 in Canton, IL to James Ora and Shirley Jean (Wilkinson) Oldham. She married Ernest Lloyd Layton, Jr. on January 14, 1966 at the Central Christian Church in Havana. Mrs. Layton is survived by her husband and mother, both of Havana, three daughters: Lauri (Keith) Bortell of Havana, Sherri (Larry) Fortney of Chapin, Lisa Layton of Havana and five sons: Hoang Nguyen of Havana, Minh Van Doan (Lon’e) of Des Moines, IA, Binh (Loan) Duong of Lincoln, Hieu (Angel) Tran of Bolingbrook, IL, Tho (Lien) Nguyen of Fremond, CA, 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters: Mary (Harvey) Johnson of Canton, Karen (Jeff) Cooper of Decatur and Cindy (Doug) Usher of Havana. She was preceded in death by her father, one granddaughter, one nephew and one brother-in-law. Mrs. Layton is a member of the Central Christian Church in Havana. She worked as a cook at the Havana Schools for 28 years retiring in 2004. Funeral services will be held at her church at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 10, 2008. Visitation will be held at the Hurley Funeral Home in Havana from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 9, 2008. Rev. Dennis Steckley will officiate. Burial will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Christian Church or to Harbor Light Hospice.
