Stephen Knoles

(1937 - 2009)

Stephen N. Knoles, 72, of rural Petersburg, IL passed away Saturday, November 14, 2009 at home, after several years of illness. He was born May 28, 1937 in Athens, IL the son of Steve and Eloise Knoles, both deceased. He married Thelma Sebring September 10, 1955.

 Steve was a 1955 graduate of Petersburg Harris High School , he served 4 years in the USAF as a medic; owned and operated several service stations in Springfield, farmed, and retired from State Journal Register as a District Manager in 1999. He loved to work on engines, and was an avid drag racing fan and participant until poor health forced him to stop. He was a fan of Nascar Racing, particularly Dale Earnhardt, Sr. He was so proud of his family. His grandchildren were the most important people in his life.  

He is survived by his wife, Thelma; sons, Mark, Paul (Cindy), and Greg, all of Springfield; three grandchildren, granddaughter, Alexandria; grandsons, Wyatt and Jake; step-grandsons, Brian and Joe George; sisters, Judy Logue of Springfield, Bobette Crumly, of rural Petersburg; brother, Danny (Kathy), of rural Petersburg; sister-in-law, Violet Barbee of South Carolina, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 10:00 am at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm also at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
