Virgil Newman (1923 -2010)
Virgil L. Newman of Petersburg, died March 4, 2010 at the Menard Convalescent Center. Mr. Newman was born September 25, 1923 on a farm near Chandlerville, IL. He was a lifelong farmer, the son of Lee Roy Newman and Elsie Leinberger. Mr. Newman farmed in the Ashland area for 28 years on the Stribling and Edwards Farm. He was a life long Lutheran. He married Carol Ruppel on April 6, 1952 at the Lutheran Church parsonage in Petersburg . He is survived by his wife Carol, and their four children, Robert (Wife, Sandra) of Tallula, Margaret Perez (husband, Jerome) of Sycamore, Gloria Newman of St. Louis and Marsha Valles (husband, Andy) of Cottage Grove, Minnesota. Also surviving are three sisters, Ellen Jurgens of Virginia, Roberta Ruppel of Petersburg, and Idella (husband, Richard) Ruppel of Chandlerville; one brother Arthur (wife, Bonnie) of Petersburg; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 11:00 am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Pastor Jeffrey Gross will be officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral services. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or Alzheimer’s Association.
