Walter Herschel Skaggs

(1930 - 2005)

Walter Herschel Skaggs, 75, of Springfield, IL died at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL at 3:01 p.m. on Saturday, November 26, 2005. He was born, May 9, 1930 in Easton, IL to Walter and Viola (Thomas) Skaggs. 

He is survived by five sisters: Marie Tucker, Eileen Phelps, Mary Barnes, JoAn Holt and Helen Nunn; and two brothers: Ronald Skaggs and James C. Skaggs. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

He was a member of American Legion Post # 502 in downtown Springfield, IL. He was a WWII Veteran, serving in the Pacific Theatre with the Marines and then later with the US air Force. Combined, he served for 8 years in active service and 3 years as a reserve. He was a graduate of Mason City High School. After his time in the military, he worked as a truck driver, most recently for the Central Illinois Food Bank.

Funeral services will be held at the Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the services. Rev. H. Curtis McCallister will officiate. Burial will be at Mason City Cemetery following the services.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.
