Wayne John Shawgo   

1918 - 2006

Wayne John Shawgo, 88, of Mason City died at his home at 7:03 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2006. He was born to Bert Allen and Minta Ellen (Becker) Shawgo on July 1st 1918 in rural Mason City. He married Dorothy Louise Rentschler on September 10, 1944 at the Methodist Parsonage in Mason City. She died January 30, 2001.

Mr. Shawgo is survived by three sons: Gary (Debbie) Shawgo of Mason City; Dale (Wanda) Shawgo of Decatur, IL; Glenn (Brenda) Shawgo of Warrenton, MO and one daughter, Ellen Shawgo of Mason City. Also surviving are two sisters: Erma Schussele and Glenna Griffin, both of Mason City; ten grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, three sisters and one son Ed Shawgo.  

Mr. Shawgo was a member of the Mason City United Methodist Church. He was  a WWII Army Veteran with the 1st Armored Division where he earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He served in Northern Africa and Italy. He later farmed in the Mason City area and worked as an electrician, plumber and handyman.  

Funeral services will be held at his church on Saturday, September 16, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City on Friday, September 15, 2006. Burial will be at Mason City Cemetery following the services. Rev. Stephen King will officiate.
