Wilbur L. Brownfield

1922 - 2007

Wilbur L. Brownfield, 85, of Havana, died at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield at 6:08 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13, 2007. He was born September 28, 1922 in Mason City, IL to Thomas and Nina Lussenhop Brownfield. He married Nancy Bandy Brooks on March 13, 1975 at the Mason City United Methodist Church.

Mr. Brownfield is survived by his wife Nancy of Havana, two sons: Tom (Terri) Brownfield of Havana and Bob Brownfield of Seattle, WA; one step daughter, Valerie Brooks of Denver, CO; four step sons: Edward Brooks of Springfield, IL, Bill Brooks of North Carolina, Todd Brooks of California and Jim Brooks of Mason City. He is also survived by one brother: Robert Brownfield of Mason City, 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son Michael, brother Lawrence Brownfield and his parents.

Mr. Brownfield was a graduate of Mason City High School. He then served in the U.S. Air Force in WWII. He farmed South East of Mason City from 1946 until 1970. He served as precinct committeeman for the Mason County Democratic Party from 1956 until 1968. He then was elected Circuit Clerk of Mason County in 1972 and served in that office until his retirement in 1992. He was on the board of directors at the Farmers Grain & Coal Company in Mason City for many years. He was also on the Lakewood Golf Club Board of Directors having served as President. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, gardener and woodworker. He enjoyed his time as an accomplished softball pitcher from the time he was in the military until 1967. He pitched in several different leagues around the state of Illinois and played in many state championship games. He was known to his family as a loving husband and father.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hurley Funeral Home in Havana. Visitation will be on Monday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. also at the funeral home. Burial will follow the services at Mason City Cemetery. Pastor Dave Byrd will officiate.
