Betty Stephens, formerly of Havana, passed away on January 20, 2021 at The Loft in Canton, Illinois. She was born on September 23, 1928 in Quincy, Illinois to John Henry and Beatrice Elizabeth (Baum) Seggelke. Betty attended St. Agnes Grade School in Springfield, Illinois and Havana Grade School, then returned to Springfield as a boarder at Sacred Heart Academy where she graduated in 1946. After graduation, she worked in the office of the Mason County Treasurer until her marriage to Jerry Stephens on June 24, 1948 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Havana. During the first fifteen years of marriage they lived and worked on the Stephens Family Turkey Farm east of Havana. They moved to Havana in 1963 and Jerry was then employed at C&IM Railroad Coal Docks. Betty worked at the Sears Catalog Store, then as co-manager with Jo Pedigo at Knoles Flowers in Havana for many years. During those years, she also studied decorative painting and taught landscape painting in oils on canvas at both The New Country Bumpkins in Pekin, Illinois and her shop, The Happy Hobo at Quiver Beach near Havana. Betty and Jerry had a busy and active life centered around their five children: Mark (Lynn) of Canton, Illinois, Dan (Kathy) of Canton, Missouri, Paul (Jan) of Havana, Mary Beth of Beason, Illinois, and Tim of Rock Falls, Illinois. Also, grandchildren: Jennifer Stephens, Cheryl (Wayne) Krus, Adam (Nicole) Stephens, Tom (Katie) Stephens, Jill (John) Bahnick, Katie (Brian) Baker, Stephanie (David) Duncan, Alex (fiancé Katie Dye) Stephens, Andy Stephens, Sarah (Steve) Bonanno, David (Kylie) Stephens, John Leslie, and Karin Leslie. And great-grandchildren: Luke, Anna, Jacob, Maddie, Andrew, Max, Anna Mei, Blake, John Henry, Emma, Josh, Gracelyn, Olivia, Elizabeth, and Caden. Their fondest memories were the ones spent camping with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family dinners and celebrations at their home on Quiver Beach were always enjoyed. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jerry, her brother, Bill, her (ex) sister-in-law, Joan, and her daughter-in-law, Phyllis. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at a later date. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Janauary 27, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana. Fr. David Whiteside will officiate. Memorial donations may be made in Betty’s name to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Online condolences can be left for the family at www.hurleyfh.com.
