Our story

As one of the oldest and most recognizable landmarks in the area, Hurley Funeral Home is a stately ode to Havana history. Established in 1857, our funeral home and cemetery has evolved greatly over the years to accommodate the evolving needs of our community. Yet our commitment to service remains the same. Even as we modernize our services and facilities, we stay true to our belief that honoring and celebrating life is deeply sacred and personal.

1857

Justice C. Pfetzing moved to Havana, Illinois from Hanover, Germany in 1857. He was a cabinetmaker and undertaker. He had ten children, two of which, Oscar and Henry Pfetzing, carried on the funeral service. Oscar had two daughters. The eldest daughter, Bula, married Grover Hurley and had two sons. These two sons, Richard and E. Jay Hurley purchased the funeral home in Havana. After WWII, in 1946, they purchased another funeral home in Petersburg.

1971

In 1971, Richard's son, Jerry Hurley, joined the firm. In 1997, the Cain Funeral Home in Mason City was purchased from Don and Lorena Cain. In January of 2000, the Styninger Funeral Homes in Mason City, San Jose and Greenview were acquired. In May of 2000, Michael J. Hurley, the son of Jerry and Janis Hurley, graduated from the University of Minnesota Program of Mortuary Science. He then joined the family firm to to become the fifth generation of funeral directors. In 2006, Lintner Funeral Home in Chandlerville was added, and is now known as Lintner-Hurley Funeral Home. In 2012, the Maas Funeral Home in Manito was purchased from Randy Maas and is now known as Maas-Hurley Funeral Home. In August of 2013, we added a crematory facility to our location in Havana.
