Dean Duane Broughton

Dean Duane Broughton, 80, of Petersburg passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2014 at Sunny Acres Home. He was born May 30, 1933 in Lincoln, IL, the son of Calvin Odell and Henrietta Mae (Bicknell) Broughton. Dean married Mary Ann Klokkenga on August 14, 1955. He is survived by three sons, George (Robin) Broughton of Wadsworth, IL; Jerry Broughton of Waubay, SD and Jeff (Susan) Broughton of Petersburg; grandchildren Anna, Eric and Kari Broughton, step-grandchildren Schuyler, Ashleigh and Haley, and step-great grandchildren Cody, Tahlon and Zoey. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary and two brothers, Calvin Joe and Eli Dale. Dean graduated from Lincoln High School and went on to attend Lincoln College and Illinois State where he earned a degree in Industrial Education. He later returned to Illinois State and received a Masters in Education. Dean devoted his life to education for 37 years. He started as an Industrial Arts teacher at Elmwood, taught and coached at Hartsburg Emden, was principal and later superintendent at New Holland Middletown finally serving as superintendent at PORTA. Dean later moved on to work as a crop adjuster for American Ag but continued to act as substitute superintendent for numerous area schools. Dean served his country as a member of the US Navy from 1952-1954, he then enlisted in the Navy Reserves from 1954-1960. He was a member of the American Legion, the 40+8 and served in the Honor Guard. Dean was member of Petersburg Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church Mens Club. He was also past president of the State Association of School Administrators. Dean loved his work in education even though it was filled with ups and downs. He was thankful to have worked with many great teachers along the way and felt that his greatest achievement was the appreciation he received from the children he taught. Dean felt he was blessed with a wonderful family and great friends and felt that his final blessing was that he never had to see the Cubs win the World Series. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 10:00 am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Petersburg. Visitation is Friday, February 28, from 5 to 7 pm at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery with Military Rites.
