Dorothy June Milstead

Dorothy Milstead, 98, of Oakford, IL, passed away April 9th, 2024. Dorothy was born March 23rd, 1926, in Cass County to Hugo and Lillian (nee Taylor) Blair. Dorothy married the love of her life, E.R. Milstead “Jr.” in 1942, settling in Oakford, IL on the farm she had lived on since childhood. Dorothy loved farm life from being on the tractor to keeping the books. She was an active member of the Oakford Methodist Church. Dorothy loved sports, especially basketball. Growing up, she was one of the few girls on the boys’ basketball team and was very competitive. If she knew there was a game on, you could guarantee she’d be sitting in front of the television watching, while alerting family and friends that a game was on. Dorothy always kept a clean car, and ran a carpool to Springfield for years as she worked at Sonotone, and then later at the State of Illinois’ first comptroller’s office. She was also an avid reader who loved reading the newspaper daily, as well as newspapers from surrounding towns. Above all things, she adored her family the most. She leaves behind two children, Barb (Richard) Moss & Dale (Cheryl) Milstead; grandchildren Brad Moss, Keith (Jen) Moss, Heather (Jim) Corum, Nicole (Dan) Niwa; great-grandchildren Ryan Moss, Joel Moss, Anna Moss, Addison Corum, Avery Corum, Sophia Niwa & Parker Niwa; step-granddaughters, Melissa Buerkett, Kelly (Matt) Walker, Abbey Buerkett, and step-great-grandchildren Lawton, Charlotte, Weston Walker and Elliot Vivian. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, E.R. Milstead “Jr.”; a daughter, Carol Alderson; and a great-granddaughter, CeCe Moss. A Visitation will be held Sunday, April 14th, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home, 122 W. Douglas Ave, Petersburg, IL 62675. A Graveside Service will be held Monday, April 15th, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Chandlerville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dorothy’s name to the Chandlerville Cemetery, 111 W. Lake, Chandlerville, IL 62627 or the Menard Co. Fair, 18450 Fairgrounds, Petersburg, IL 62675. Hurley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
