Marjorie "Marj" Kathryn Hinds

Marjorie “Marj” Hinds, 60, of Petersburg, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Springfield Memorial Hospital, after a drunk driver collided with her vehicle. She was born November 18, 1963, the daughter of Elmer F. and Doris K. (McLaughlin) Hinds in Springfield, Illinois. She married Patricia “Trinket” Eckler on December 13, 2014, in Springfield. Marj was a graduate of PORTA high school, class of ‘81. She went on to receive a Masters in social work from the University of Illinois. She served both St. Johns and Memorial hospitals as a social worker. Marj supported the LGBTQ + community, and loved a good drag show. She was a member of the Parkway Christian Church in Springfield where she enjoyed serving as the clerk and in many other capacities around the church. Her greatest joy in life was being a mom and Mamoo to her grandchildren. Marj was an avid reader. She belonged to two book clubs and enjoyed library book sales. She loved jigsaw puzzles and you would often see her and her puzzle team at the Hand of Fate on puzzle nights. Gardening brought her pleasure and she loved sharing that hobby with her grandson Leo. Marj was a very involved grandma who rarely missed an event the kids were a part of. She was affectionately known as the wrestling team's grandma. Marj is survived by her wife, Trinket Eckler; her daughter, Katie (Bobby) Calhoun of Petersburg; her stepchildren, Patience (significant other Mike Montague) Eckler of East Dundee, Illinois, and Rachael Eckler-Klabunde of Grayslake, Illinois; her grandchildren, Lila, Leo, Lawless and Lenox Calhoun, and Ellie Klabunde; her siblings, Herschel Hinds, Ethel (Russel) Bounds, Arnold Hinds and Nina (John) Westerfeld; an honorary sister, Shelly Monroe; and many nieces and nephews. Marj was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Nellie Davis. A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg. Cremation rites will follow. A celebration of life will be held at the Parkway Christian Church, 2700 Lindbergh Blvd, Springfield, Illinois 62704. A date and time for the celebration of life will be announced once Trinket is well enough to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Petersburg Youth Wrestling Club or the Parkway Christian Church. Those contributions may be sent to Hurley Funeral Home, 122 W.
