Shelley Marie Monroe

Shelley Marie Monroe, 60, of Greenview, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. She was born September 7, 1963, in Springfield to Shelby and Linda (nee Delamo) Lynn. She married Lenny Monroe on December 31, 1983, at the Church of Christ in Petersburg and they had a wonderful marriage for the past 40 years. Shelley is survived by her beloved husband, Lenny; her pride and joy children, Lainey Tamar Monroe, Clayton Alexander Monroe, Savannah Elena (husband Wesley) Hobbs, Magdalene Athena Monroe and Creighton Faulkner Monroe; her siblings, Brian (wife Lisa) Lynn, John (partner Sandy) Lynn and Kelley (husband Troy); and her cherished granddaughter, Evangelina “Evie” Hobbs. She was preceded in death by her father and mother. Shelley’s life was a melody of love, compassionate care, and community – a tune that will resonate in the hearts of those she touched forever. Shelley worked as a registered nurse at St. John’s Hospital for over 20 years, which was a passion as well as a vocation, touching countless lives. This was showcased by being selected for “Angel of the Month” on numerous occasions in addition to the Daisy Award [a national program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary, compassionate, and skillful care given by nurses]. Her commitment to the local community shone bright by efforts with Greenview Schools PTO, Girl Scouts, and BoxTops for education, not to mention organic care-giving and small tasks to those in need. She was a member of the Greenview Christian Church and over the years volunteered with Wednesday night programs, vacation bible school and served as a deaconess. She was an avid gardener, genealogical-research master, dedicated puzzle worker, lover of home, hearth, babies and sweats, and had a passion for scouring auctions and antique stores, especially for antique clocks. Shelley’s greatest joy of life was being a mother, caring for her children (especially the baby phase), and being an interim mother to any who needed. A visitation will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 10:00 am, at Greenview Christian Church in Greenview, Illinois, with Pastor Ron Ferricks officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Greenview. Please note, the dress code for all is casual. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition for ovarian cancer research or the Greenview Christian Church chair lift fund.
