James "Jim" Cline

Dr. James “Jim” A. Cline, age 74, passed away on Saturday, October 26, at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Jim, known affectionately in the community as “Doc Cline”, was born on January 24, 1950 in Lincoln, IL to Robert “Bud” Cline and Edna Dencker Cline. Jim was a 1968 graduate of Greenview High school, a 1972 graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, and a 1976 graduate of University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in Champaign. Upon graduating, he practiced for two years in Mt. Vernon, IL before coming back to his home area. He practiced at Petersburg Veterinary Clinic, eventually becoming owner. Later, he formed a partnership with Dr. Terrence O’Brien. Jim also farmed and formed a passion for raising Gelbvieh cattle, with a keen interest in their genetics. He was an avid outdoorsman - he loved fishing, hunting, and trap-shooting. While on the farm, you could find him on his four-wheeler checking his cattle and tending to his property. He was a member of the Menard County Sportsman’s Club, NRA, and fishing clubs, to name a few. Jim also enjoyed poker nights with friends. Jim is survived by his daughters, Abbey Venturini and Hayley Kalva, both of Petersburg; granddaughters Tessa and Nina Venturini of Petersburg; sister Margaret “Maggie” Urbanik (Charles) of Naples, FL; brother Dr. Joseph “Joe” Cline (Susan) of Marquette, MI; sister-in-law Joan Cline of Naples, FL; ex-wife and friend Sally (Goben) Cline of Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Cline. A Visitation and Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 9 at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg. The Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 PM, with a Memorial Service following at 2:00 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date for the family to honor Jim’s memory. Memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s name to Menard Animal Protection (MAP), menardanimalprotection.org/donate; Menard County Animal Control, 217-632-7302; the Animal Protective League (APL), www.apl-shelter.org/memorials, or to an animal rescue of the donor’s choice. Cremation rites have been accorded. Hurley Funeral Home is assisting the family at this time.
