Mary Rose Satorius

Mary Rose Satorius, 92, of Petersburg, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2024. She was born May 17, 1932, at home in Oakford, Illinois, the daughter of Charles and Pearalee (Justice) Wiseman. In 1950, she graduated from Harris High School, then attended Illinois State University for one year. She married Dale Hollis Satorius on September 9, 1951. He preceded her in death on December 22, 2023. Mary was a housewife, farm helper for her husband Dale, and stay-at-home mother until she returned to obtain her education degree at Lincoln Land Community College. She graduated from Sangamon State University with her bachelor’s degree in education in 1972 and started teaching the same year at Petersburg Elementary School. She returned to obtain her master’s degree, and finally retired in 2001 after 29 years of teaching. Mary enjoyed gardening and had huge gardens each summer, resulting in canned goods throughout the year. She was an avid seamstress, sewing her children’s clothing, homecoming and prom dresses, doll clothes, curtains, and crafts. She loved cooking, baking, and entertaining. Mary was a member of the local semi-professional women’s basketball team, the Oakford Farmerettes, who was inducted into the PORTA Hall of Fame in 2018. Mary was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron. She belonged to the Petersburg Women’s Club and served as President for several years. She was a member of the Menard County University Women, serving in various officer roles and as President for several years. She belonged to the Ansarettes, an Ansar Shrine women’s group, and the Springfield Symphony Guild. She was a proud member of the DAR. Mary was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church for over 70 years. She served as a Sunday School teacher, Elder, and Deacon. Mary and her husband followed PORTA Sports for years. Mary is survived by her three children, Mark (Debbie) Satorius of Arnold, Maryland, Denise (Mark) Grant of Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Vicki Johnson of Springfield, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Drew (Elaine) Satorius, Rebecca (Jason) Ott, Lauren Johnson, Kyle Johnson, Dane (Grace) Watson, Danielle (Bo) Watson, Derek (Ellie) Watson, and Diana (Tom) Kanyarusoke; eleven great grandchildren, Rudy and Dana Satorius, Kennedy and Sebastian Ott, Hollis Papadopoulos, Ella and Luke Watson, Rhys Watson, Ethan and Drake Watson, and Benjamin Kanyarusoke; A brother, Jake Wiseman; a brother in law, Jim Satorius; a sister in law, Marsha Satorius; and nieces and nephews, Jeff and Rodney Wiseman, Lynn (Gus) Gustison, Jennifer Satorius, Ashley (Matt) Rutz, and Brianne (late nephew, Brian) Satorius; and numerous cousins. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; a sister-in-law, Marge Wiseman; and nephews Brian and Michael Satorius. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at the Central Presbyterian Church in Petersburg with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 am. Pastor Ryan Edgecombe will be officiating. A committal service will immediately follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Petersburg.
