Russell "Rusty" Evans

Russell “Rusty” Evans, 63, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2016. Rusty completed his journey in this life after a valiant battle with cancer and lung disease. Rusty slipped away comfortably at home, he always vowed that’s the way he would go. He was born to Russell and Bessie Wadley Evans in Peoria. He was the second oldest of 6 ornery boys-James of Lincoln, David (Jeanette) of Bath, Rodger of Lincoln, Josh of Mason City and one little sister-Patty (David) Bridgeman of Peoria. He married his first wife in 1971, after 12 years that was enough. He was a busy man for years until he met the absolute love of his life Lori Anderson, whom he has shared his home and life with for the last 13 years. Rusty loved nothing more than he did his children and grandchildren, they were the light of his life. He is survived by five children, three daughters-Toni (Saford) Bortell of Manito, Misty Evans of Marquette Heights, and Samantha Martinie-Evans of Lincoln. His boys were his pride and joy, James Russell “JR” (Patience) Evans of Mason City and Dakota (Meaghan) Martinie. His grandbabies could do no wrong, he was so proud of Joshua and Jesse Harbourn; Deseree, Koty, and Cole Bortell; Skylar, Cameron, and Hailey Fischer; Austin and Shyann Beck; Darien, Aidin, and Addisyn Evans; Faith, Bailey, and Joshua Martinie. He was beyond proud when he found out he would be a great grandpa in December to twins. We can’t forget his four legged babies as well, Sunshine and Sassy. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and his favorite bank poling partner-brother Ronnie. Rusty served our country in for two years in the US Army, stationed primary in Korea. He made three trips to Vietnam to guard equipment. He went to work for Caterpillar shortly after finishing his military career, retiring this year with 40 years. Rusty was a rowdy character in his younger years many could attest to some stories. He had a life-long passion with fishing; many tall fishing stories were shared on the front porch over a cup of coffee or a cold one in his later years. He was always up to wheel and deal on every purchase, he had to be certain he taught his children how to make a good deal. His unpredictable conversation and hilarious one liners kept family on their toes, a tremendous character. This loving man knew no strangers, he would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need, and he was always selfless and kind to all. His last bit of advice he would leave you is love those babies and take the time to go throw out that one last hook with them. Funeral services for Rusty will be held Friday, October 7, 2016 at 11 am at the Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City. Burial will follow at Mason City Cemetery. The family will receive guests at a visitation on Thursday night, October 6, 2016 from 5 to 7 pm, also at Hurley Funeral Home.
